Network Rail has used laser scanners and drones to create a 3D digital model of the 48-arch Whalley viaduct in Lancashire, prior to carrying out maintenance on the 19th century brick structure across the Ribble Valley. The model will be used to plan brickwork repairs, vegetation removal, strengthening and river erosion prevention works.

ScotRail is working with Primary Engineer to promote STEM careers to pupils at 30 primary schools, training teachers to present an engineering project to their classes with the help of ScotRail representatives.

Transport for London announced on March 4 that Rachel McLean will no longer become interim Chief Finance Officer following the departure of Simon Kilonback in April. McLean’s appointment had been announced on January 19, but following medical advice she is no longer able to take on the role. She will remain as Chief Finance Officer, Crossrail Ltd and Finance Director, TfL Operations. An replacement interim Chief Finance Officer will be appointed in due course.

Northern is inviting applications for engineering apprenticeship places at its depots in Hull, Manchester, Leeds, Newcastle and Liverpool. The programme covers more than 300 young people who go on to work for the operator in a variety of roles. Applications are open until March 13.

High Speed 1 Ltd, Southeastern and Ashford MP Damian Green took part a the ‘Kent Rail COP’ conference at Ashford International to discuss ways of increasing the use of High Speed 1 to cut road traffic and reduce CO2 emissions. Among the ideas proposed were partnerships with universities to offer flexible tickets for students and with football clubs to offer supporters a rail ticket with their game ticket.
