UK: Leasing company VTG has awarded Yellow Rail a long-term contract to provide maintenance services for 620 hopper and box wagons used by Mendip Rail.

The contract covers maintenance, repairs, fleet planning, supply chain management and materials services. Work will be undertaken at Mendip Rail’s Merehead (Torr Quarry) and Whatley sites, with 24 h main line call out included.

Derby-based Yellow Rail offers safety-critical maintenance, bogie overhaul, engineering design, material supply, field services and mobile wheel re-profiling. ‘Our vision is to increase our capability in order to become more important to our customers’, said Managing Director Andy Kevins, who founded the company in 2007. ‘The extension of our freight service portfolio to include maintenance is demonstration that we are progressing in our ambition.’

Mendip Rail Managing Director Jason Black said Yellow Rail would bring a ‘fresh approach’ to wagon maintenance for the joint venture of Hanson Aggregates and Aggregate Industries, which moves more than 9 million tonnes of aggregate a year from quarries in Somerset to terminals in London and southeast England.

Announcing the contract on November 8, VTG Rail UK Managing Director Colin Denman said ‘our relationship with Mendip Rail goes back a very long way, and providing it with the best possible service, thereby enabling the business to operate to its maximum capabilities, is absolutely crucial’.

‘We are confident that Yellow Rail is the right partner to provide the improvements we need in order to meet our customer’s expectations’, he added.
