Manila Sustina EMU

PHILIPPINES: The Department of Transportation has awarded Sumitomo Corp and Japan Transport Engineering Co a ¥72·5bn contract to supply 38 eight-car Sustina trainsets by 2028 for the next phase of Manila’s North-South Commuter Railway.

In July 2019 the two Japanese companies were awarded a contract to supply 13 eight-car Sustina EMUs for the 53 km NSCR Phase 1 Project connecting Malolos and Clark. Planned north and south extensions will take the 1 435 mm gauge route to 110 km, and an order for further trains was announced on March 18. The network is eventually planned to reach 163 route-km, connecting the regional business districts of Clark and New Clark City in the north with central Manila and Calamba City in Laguna province to the south of the capital.

The extension project forms part of Japan’s Official Development Assistance programme and is being financed under on a loan agreement between Japan International Co-operation Agency and the Philippines government.
