UK: A scheme to check that Railcards are being used properly is to be trialled this year, the Department for Transport has announced.

If the trial proves successful, Railcard users will need to complete a ‘simple validation check’, in a move which DfT said would ‘save taxpayers around £20m a year’.

DfT told Rail Business UK that the check would focus on validating Railcards at the point of sale, rather than when tickets are checked. Customers will be asked to scan their Railcard or enter details such as their name or Railcard number when purchasing tickets.

When using online channels, if the customer creates an account, they would only have to enter this information to validate their Railcard once. After this, Railcard details would be automatically checked without the need to re-enter details.
