UK: High Speed 2 project promoter HS2 Ltd has published a Net Zero Carbon Plan, which includes making construction sites diesel-free by 2029, halving emissions from steel and concrete by 2030 and sourcing zero carbon energy for traction power when services begin.

The first diesel-free worksite will be implemented this year, and the use of diesel is planned to end at all construction locations by 2029. From 2035, HS2 Ltd will reduce carbon emissions as much as possible, with those that cannot be eliminated offset through measures including planting trees.

HS2 Ltd is collaborating with research organisations to accelerate innovation in low-carbon technologies such as alternative fuels and renewable energy, and it is working with supply chain partners and industry peers to set ‘ambitious science-based targets’ in 2022 to tackle ‘carbon emission hotspots’ as the high speed line between London and Crewe is built.
