UK: Spencer Group has won a tendered contract to construct a replacement station at Waterbeach, between Cambrdge and Ely, for completion by the end of 2027.
Opening of the new station is a planning requirement that would unlock the proposed development of large numbers of new homes, which could eventually double the size of the village.
The station is to be built on a different site to the present one, with wider platforms, an accessible footbridge and a 200-space car park. It will also be integrated into walking, cycling and bus facilities.
‘The new railway station was a core requirement of the Waterbeach development’s planning permission and our objective is to ensure rail travel is a preferred choice for residents’, explained Councillor Brian Milnes, Chair of the Greater Cambridge Partnership executive board, on August 8. ‘The project’s progress is excellent news. The new station will offer quick, convenient access to the city and reduce the reliance on private cars.’
The GCP executive board agreed the full business case for the new station in July, and is now working to finalise elements of the contract valued at £28·5m + VAT.
SLC is acting as project manager and client representative, while Volker Fitzpatrick has been undertaking early contractor involvement activities.
A consultation on the closure of the existing station is expected to take place towards the end of this year.
