Announcing the contracts on January 17, the infrastructure manager said the work packages were designed to provide efficiencies through making the best use of resources, consistency, continual improvement, better co-ordinated access to the railway and a focus on innovation, with the long duration enabling suppliers to better manage their own resources and supply chain.

NR Wales & Western is to work with suppliers to find new ways of working in line with the principles of its Swift, Pragmatic & Efficient Enhancement Delivery approach.

Similar contracts for signalling are to be awarded later in the year.
