AUSTRIA: Work has begun on the second and final phase of the refurbishment of the 4 766 m long single-track Bosruck tunnel which links the Länder of Oberösterreich and Steiermark.

Opened in 1906, the tunnel lies between Spital am Pyhrn and Ardning on the route from Linz to Selzthal. The modernisation work will require the total closure of the tunnel, with replacement bus services running until July 29. ÖBB has budgeted €23·9m for the project.

According to ÖBB Infrastruktur, the latest work will cover renewal of the tunnel lining and installation of a rigid catenary bar. This builds on the previous phase in 2016, when the track was renewed and the tunnel floor repaired. The refurbishment should enable the tunnel to remain in use until at least 2040, the infrastructure manager says.
