ROMANIA: CFR Infrastructură has awarded a nine-month contract worth €586 000 to Consis Proiect to conduct a feasibility study into the electrification of the Videle – Giurgiu railway line.

It is estimated that it will cost €46m to electrify the line from Rădulești to Giurgiu Nord station; the section in the north between Videle and Rădulești is already electrified. The cost of wiring will be financed by the EU through the Romanian share of the Recovery & Resilience Plan.

The single-track line has been the main connection between the border with Bulgaria and București since 2005, when the Grădiștea bridge on the more direct București – Giurgiu main line collapsed during floods. Porr has been repairing and modernising that route under a 30 month, €97m contract that was signed in late 2020, with the work expected to be completed by late 2022.
