UK: Network Rail has awarded Invensys Rail a £57·8m contract to undertake the Great Northern Great Eastern signalling upgrade project.

The 16-month programme forms part of the East Coast Main Line Capacity Relief Project, which aims to upgrade the Doncaster - Lincoln - Peterborough line for use as the primary daytime route for freight traffic, freeing paths on the East Coast Main Line for passenger trains.

Invensys Rail said its contract covers design, installation and commissioning works for the resignalling of 138 km of track. This includes 45 level crossings, the demolition and removal of 24 signalboxes and level crossing gate boxes and the replacement of seven interlockings.

Commissioning is to be undertaken in five phases, with the first scheduled for August this year and the last for March 2014.
