ROMANIA: Infrastructure manager CFR SA has selected a consortium of Webuild (50%), Pizzarotti (30%) and Salcef (20%) to modernise and electrify a section of the 166 km line from Cluj-Napoca to Episcopia Bihor near the Hungarian border.

The €490m Lot 4 contract covers design and construction works on 50 km of the route including the stations at Tileagd, Oșorhei, Oradea Est, Oradea and Episcopia Bihor.

The work will be financed by European Union funds through Romania’s National Recovery & Resilience Plan.

The project will include the installation of ETCS Level 2 and an increase in line speed to 160 km/h for passenger trains and 120 km/h for freight. This aims to increase comfort and safety, reduce emissions and make rail more competitive than road.
