SINGAPORE: Land Transport Authority has issued a request for information seeking the industry’s participation in the use of unmanned aerial vehicles to inspect metro tunnels.

Planned automated tunnel inspection trials would include 360° video mapping and the use of software to automatically detect defects from the video taken and provide their location.

The project would expands on LTA’s proof-of-concept trials at 10 Thomson-East Coast Line sites, where UAVs are taking aerial photographs and videos to monitor progress on the work. LTA expects UAV technology to improve the accuracy of inspections and free up engineers’ time by enabling them to focus on analysing the data captured.

If the trials prove to be effective, LTA aims to fully deploy these technologies for routine tunnel inspections in the next five years.
