First metro line opened 1978. Network now comprises 5 lines (U6 being a light metro line) with 109 stations. Also operates an extensive tram network (28 lines), with the Wiener Lokalbahn sharing tracks from Oper/Karlsplatz to Schedifkaplatz.

Line U1 was extended south to Oberlaa (4·6 km, 5 stations) on September 2, 2017.

Work on the U2xU5 project to rebuild the city centre section of line U2 and create new line U5 began in February 2018. A new alignment for U2 is under construction southwest from From Schottentor Universität to new platforms at Rathaus, then continuing south to Pilgramgasse (U4) and Matzleinsdorfer Platz. The current U2 route from Rathaus to Karlsplatz (1·7 km) becomes new line U5, being extended north to Frankhplatz and Elterleinplatz. Further extensions to both lines are in planning.
