ATJUST 128 cm tall, Melbourne resident Bruce ’Giant’ Chaplin has a problem when boarding the city’s trams; he can’t reach the coin slots on ticket machines.
While he can usually find a fellow passenger to drop his coins in the slot for him, this isn’t always possible. On a recent trip no-one was able to help, leaving him unable to buy a ticket despite his best efforts.
A ticket inspector then refused to take his money, instead issuing a A$150 penalty. This was revoked following publicity in the local media, Victorian Minister of Transport Peter Bachelor saying that ticket inspectors had an obligation to help passengers with special needs, and ’common sense should have prevailed’.
After the media coverage, Chaplin said he now has many people offering to help him buy a ticket.
