THIS AUTUMN, Switzerland’s metre-gauge Rhätische Bahn is taking delivery of the first of 21 transporter wagons designed to carry ACTS roll-on roll-off containers. Developed for the RhB by Josef Meyer Waggon AG of Rheinfelden, the SI7751 series have a tare weight of 18 tonnes and can carry two 21 tonne containers each. Loading height is 860 mm above rail, and the maximum speed is 90 km/h, although brakes and bogies are configured to run at up to 100 km/h.

The vehicles will be used to convey rubbish and recyclable materials to a new incinerator and sorting facility built by canton Graubünden in the Unterland region. This replaces previous arrangements to transport material to Niederurnen and Buchs. As part of this process, all movements are being containerised using ACTS equipment, requiring the development of a metre-gauge carrier.
