Transport Minister Soud Nseirat announced on May 8 that a consortium of Jordanian, Pakistani and Chinese firms has been awarded a contract worth between 170 and 180m dinars to build the Amman - Zarqa light rail line (RG 1.07 p9).The contract was expected to be signed during the World Economic Forum meeting, which began on May 18. The Jordanian government has promised 60m dinars in financial support spread over three years. Construction of the 33?km line, which may subsequently be extended to Amman airport, is planned to start in 2008. It is expected to carry 47 000 passengers/day.n
