SPAIN: MAY 6 saw the opening of the latest phase of the Trambesòs light rail network in eastern Barcelona, a 2·2 km extension of Line T5 from Besòs to Sant Joan Baptista. With three intermediate stops, the route has cost €25m to build.

Comprising routes T4 and T5, the Trambesòs network now runs for 11·5 km serving a total of 23 stops, including six interchanges with the metro and one direct connection with Renfe suburban services at Estacio de Sant Adrià. The third phase of the T5 programme will see the route extended to Gorg, serving intermediate stops at Encants de Sant Adrià and Sant Roc.

The Trambaix network of routes T1, T2 and T3 serving the west of the city now stands at 15 km and 29 stops, following the opening of a 600 m extension of T3 to Sant Feliu on April 21. This was completed at a cost of €12m, including the construction of 65-space car park.

• The Catalunya regional governnment has called tenders for studies for a 3·4 km extension of metro Line 1 from Fondo to Badalona Centre, where there would be an interchange with an extension of Line 2 from Pep Ventura. With three intermediate stations, the extension to Line 1 is expected to be used by 19 500 passengers a day.
