Concerned that Japan’s falling birthrate and aging population will combine to reduce the number of passengers from 2020, commuter railways in the Tokyo region have begun developing child care businesses in an effort to encourage families with two working parents and young children to live near the stations. Tokyo Metro Co opens its first day care centre this month, while Keio Corp is planning to build 10 housing blocks with child care facilities over the next five years
