ON SEPTEMBER 7 San Francisco Municipal Railway received approval from the city’s Public Transportation Commission to operate tram services along the Embarcadero waterfront from Market Street to Fisherman’s Wharf. Construction of the route is virtually complete, and test running will start this month.

The $140m extension is expected to open early next year, replacing an existing bus service. To augment the fleet of 17 rebuilt PCC trams that have been operating the F Market ’heritage’ route since August 1995, Muni has bought 10 Peter Witt trams from Milano, dating from the 1920s.
