MEETING ON September 14, the Spanish cabinet gave its approval for the Ministry of Development to begin tendering for a €143m project to quadruple the San Cristóbal de los Ángeles – Pinto section of Renfe suburban route C3 in Madrid.

The programme has been divided into two packages. The first, due for completion within 36 months and a budget of €25·6m, covers the 4·9 km between San Cristóbal and Getafe Industrial and will include renewing the existing double track, installation of two electronic interlockings and the construction of new 240 m long platforms.

A budget of €117·4m has been set for the 10·3 km Getafe – Pinto section, where Pinto station is to be rebuilt underground and new stations are to be provided at Parque Andalucía and La Tenería. The contract is expected to take 42 months to execute.

Studies for extending the quadruple track beyond Parla to C3's southern terminus at Aranjuez are now well in hand.
