Improved passenger information and emergency communications are in prospect following a research programme funded by Britain’s Department of Trade & Industry. Details of the Hiflirts project are to be unveiled by ERA Technology on January 24.

The High Intensity data For Light Rail Transport Systems concept uses GSM radio links to transmit compressed digital audio and video signals and other data to and from moving vehicles. An on-train help point will provide communications between passengers, driver and control room staff, with video providing a back-up to the radio communications to enhance the perception of passenger safety. Multiple-channel radio operation offers enhanced bandwidth, conveying video images at 1 frame/sec.

A demonstration unit has been developed under the initial programme, and the Hiflrts partners are now seeking further funding to help implement a trial operation on an existing light rail route.
