PERU’s MINISTRY of Transport & Communications has selected Ferrocarril Central Andino to undertake an upgrade of the 914mm gauge Huancayo - Huancavelica Railway that will include conversion to 1435mm gauge.

To be completed within 480 days, the US$18·1m project is to be funded by the government, with US$14·9m provided by a loan from the Andean Development Corp.

FCA has also developed proposals for a 21 km tunnel on its main line across the Andes that would cut the journey time between Lima and Huancayo to 4h and Lima - La Oroya to 2h. This is expected to cost a total of US$400m, which would also be provided by the government. n
