Amtrak has proposed converting the New York - St Albans Vermonter service to DMU operation for a three-year demonstration project, saving the state $4·2m in subsidies because of lower fuel and crew costs. Under the proposal Vermont Agency of Transportation would buy five DMU cars from Colorado Railcar with a $17·5m FRA loan, and Amtrak would provide $2m for transition costs. The DMUs would run between St Albans and New Haven, where passengers for New York would have to change into a Northeast Corridor service. Amtrak is hoping to order the cars this month and launch the service before the end of 2007.
