TURKISH civil engineering group Güris Insaat ve Mühendislik AS has been awarded a €31bn contract to rebuild a 3·7 km section of north-south tram route in Krakow as a segregated light rail line. Funded by EBRD and EIB, the contract was formally signed in Krakow on July 9. The work is expected to take 33 months to complete.

The deal covers civil works, including the construction of two new tunnel sections totalling 900m. Güris will also be responsible for design and installation of the trackwork, power supplies and signalling, including automatic vehicle location equipment and passenger information systems.

The city centre section of the Krakow Fast Tram Project starts from Rondo Grzegorzecki, east of the central area, and runs north along Al Prowst past the botanic gardens to Rondo Mogilskie, before turning west to Modrzewskiego. A new tunnel will take the light rail line under PKP’s Glowny station, from where it will turn north past the polytechnic college to rejoin existing tracks at Dworzek Towarowy. n
