THE NEWLY-ELECTED President of the Madrid regional government, Esperanza Aguirre, has unveiled a €3·7bn programme to add another 72·7 km to the city’s metro network by the time her term of office comes to an end in 2007. The programme comprises 15 individual projects, combining 42·1 km of extensions to the metro network itself with the construction of three light metro routes totalling 30·6 km.

Involving the construction of 81 new stations and five interchanges to serve 737000 potential users, it is expected that the programme will require the use of six TBMs. The largest single metro extension will take Line 10 from Fuencarral to San Sebasti
