E-AWS has been developed to remove the need for Automatic Warning System receivers to be switched between high and low sensitivity as trains move between areas with differing or no electrification systems.

The solid state magnetic detector used by E-AWS covers the full range of receiver-to-magnet sensitivities, eliminating the need for frequent height adjustments and calibration. In addition, the condition of AWS magnets can be recorded for safety and maintenance purposes.

As the receiver adjusts automatically, it is particularly suited for use on diesel trains operating between electrified and non-electrified areas. E-AWS is being retro-fitted to Class 159 DMUs operated by South West Trains. Bombardier is installing it on Class 222 inter-city DEMUs for Midland Main Line.
