NORFOLK Southern unveiled a $747·2m capital spending programme for 2000 on January 10. This follows a $1·1bn programme in 1999. According to Chairman, President & CEO David Goode ’Norfolk Southern is moving as quickly as possible to complete capacity improvement projects ... to meet customer needs and improve service levels.’

Among the major items on the current shopping list are 150 new six-axle high-adhesion locomotives to be acquired under a leasing deal, and the upgrading of existing locos.

Also planed is $576m in track, bridge and signalling improvements, including double tracking and new passing loops. On the rolling stock side, NS intends to purchase 255 multi-level car carriers and lease another 475 articulated units.
