LAST MONTH Singapore’s Land Transit Authority awarded an S$134·6m contract to ERG Ltd and Motorola Worldwide for the supply of an integrated smart card fare collection system covering all public transport on the island. Around 22000 readers and 5 million cards will be required by the time the project is fully commissioned in 2002.

The contactless equipment will be fitted to Singapore MRT’s metro routes, the Northeast line and LRT peoplemovers now under construction, and around 3750 buses operated by the two bus companies. The ERG/Motorola Alliance will also provide the infrastructure for data processing and central clearing of revenues. There will be an interface with the island’s existing NETS cash smart card scheme, and provision will be made for further electronic payment applications in the future.
