WELL, it turns out that we were wrong about the Winter Olympics train service from Milano Malpensa Airport to Torino. We said last month (RG 3.06 p109) that passengers were obliged to resort to buses for the trip between Malpensa and the high speed line at Novara. Not so.

Here is evidence that Trenitalia’s ETR500 trains did run to and from the airport. The photograph shows the first departure from Malpensa at 10.40 on February 10. Due to arrive in Torino Porta Nuova at 12.05, Train MA9502 ran over FNM tracks to Novara Nord where it reversed to gain access to the high speed line. There was one other departure from the airport at 20.40, with return trains leaving Torino at 06.55 and 16.55.

The service lasted only until February 26, during which just 7000 passengers were carried, according to Trenitalia.
