FOUR static cameras have been provided at 17 Utrecht tram stops, along with Adpro Axiom Video Motion Detection and Fast Scan III transmission equipment. This provides integrated monitoring of the public transport network, aiming to reduce crime and vandalism, and reassure passengers.

Adpro Axiom looks for specific targets within its viewing area. It can discriminate against unwanted movements, and when it identifies an intrusion it alerts an operator in transport operator Connexxion’s Nieuwegein control room. High-resolution freeze frame images are transmitted to the staff, who can communicate with mobile guards and the police.

Tram vehicles are also being equipped with CCTV. As well as improving passenger and staff security these cameras serve a safety role by assisting drivers to check the doors. The equipment also allows Connexxion to run demographic surveys.
