FULL-SPECTRUM lighting recreating 90% of the range of sunlight is being installed on 423 Montréal metro cars during the refurbishment of the 1970s-built vehicles.

’Cool white fluorescents are depressive’, said Bernard Pepin, a colour specialist who advised operator STM on the refurbishment programme. ’These full-spectrum lights, on the other hand, have a direct effect on metabolism, fostering a positive effect on mood and the immune systems. Plus the capacity of the eye to see clearly is improved, so the visual ergonomics are superior to average lighting.’

The new lighting also has the advantage of a service life three times longer than that of the tubes used previously.
