Krakow Duewag trams

The first of five more secondhand Düwag GT8S trams which MPK Kraków has purchased from Düsseldorf arrived in the Polish city on November 24. Two will be used for spare parts and three will undergo modernisation similar to 28 already in operation, gaining a low-floor middle section, air-conditioning and an electronic passenger information system.

Singapore’s Land Transport Authority has awarded Woh Hup a S$496 contract for design and construction of Punggol interchange station on Cross Island Line Phase 2. An Obayashi Corp and Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Co (Singapore) JV has been awarded a S$758m contract to design and build a 5 km long 12 m diameter double-track single bore tunnel between Fairways Drive and Sin Ming Walk. A 2 km stretch will pass under the Central Catchment Nature Reserve, where the tunnel will be 70 m below ground level rather than the usual 20 to 30 m. Opening is planned for 2032.


Transport for London has awarded VolkerRail a framework contract for the renewal of embedded track on the London Trams network. The contract announced on December 2 runs for three years with options for five more. It is the third such contract awarded to VolkerRail since 2012, with the contractor having so far replaced more than 6 000 m of track at 32 sites in the Croydon area.

The US Federal Transit Administration has issued Safety Advisory 22-4 covering best practice in suicide prevention signage and messaging, and has also published a report on emergency egress in rail tunnels.

Mumbai M3

Contractor Doğuş-Soma JV completed the last section of tunnelling for the 33·5 km Mumbai metro Line 3 from Colaba to Seepz on November 30. The project is being undertaken through seven civils contracts which used 17 TBMs. The first phase is expected to be commissioned by December 2023.

Mendoza San Diego

San Diego’s MTS has donated a further 36 redundant Siemens SD100 light rail vehicles to the Metrotranvía light rail network at Mendoza in Argentina, following from an initial three which arrived earlier this year. Mendoza is covering all costs, including shipping, labour and staff training.

A 2 km two-station northwestern extension of Ningbo metro Line 2 from Congyuan Road to Honglian opened on December 1, taking the line to 36·5 km.

The Schöneicher-Rüdersdorfer Straßenbahn near Berlin has acquired two Type M light rail vehicles previously used by Ruhrbahn in Mülheim.

Škoda Group has won a €2m contract to modernise six Tatra T3 trams for Liberec.


TravelMaster has awarded UrbanThings a contract to use its UrbanHub platform to create an app which will enable passengers in South Yorkshire to order and register smartcards, purchase tickets and load them onto their smart cards by smartphone.
