GEMCO Rail Pty Ltd is to invest A$5·75m in a ’one-stop shop’ wagon maintenance facility in Forrestfield, Perth. After it opens in September, Managing Director Jim Ireland sees the facility becoming a ’railway service precinct’, with other companies leasing space at the site.

Linked to Western Australia’s standard and 1067mm gauge tracks, the 5840m2 plant is being developed by PS Developments. Westinghouse Brakes is to relocate its Cannington operations to Forrestfield. Ireland said rail privatisation has ’created an increase in the amount of outsourcing of maintenance requirements, bringing opportunities for niche maintenance providers such as Gemco’.
