AEA Technology Rail has developed an electronic version of its Passenger Load Determination System, used to assess the number of passengers on a train at any given time. Developed from AEA’s existing PLD which already tracks around 2 million passenger-journeys a week, the updated e-PLD is expected to be simpler to install.

A sensor is fitted to the secondary suspension airbag of each vehicle. By measuring the total weight and dividing by average passenger weights the number of passengers can be estimated. Information on dwell times is also collected at each station stop throughout the day, enabling operators to improve stock utilisation and reduce overcrowding.
