NOMAD has raised £8m of investment from Amadeus Capital Partners and T-Mobile Venture Fund, which will be used to fund the further roll-out of its on-train wireless broadband services.

The UK-based company’s business model is based on acquiring broadband franchises from train operators, then selling rights to use its network to service providers. Nomad has a technology development centre in Canada, and has installed its pre-WiMAX technology and trackside wireless base stations in Britain, the Netherlands and North America.

Onboard broadband was initially aimed at providing passenger internet access, but according to Nomad demand is now being driven by operators seeking connectivity for staff communications, maintenance systems, passenger information and asset tracking. n
