USA: Maryland Department of Transportation MTA has awarded Amtrak a five-year contract to continue to operate MARC Penn Line commuter services on a 124 km route between Washington, DC, and Perryville, Maryland.

Amtrak said it had faced ‘strong competitors with excellent reputations’ during the tendering process, and had won the next contract because its technical proficiency was rated the highest of the bidders.

‘Commuter contracts help Amtrak expand our business and meet our financial goals’, said Amtrak’s Chief Commercial Officer, Stephen Gardner, on February 28. ‘MDOT MTA selecting Amtrak for this contract speaks volumes about the high-quality service we have provided over many years to Maryland and MARC passengers, and the strong operating relationship we have developed with MARC during that time.’
