USA: MTA New York City Transit plans to use a statistical analysis model similar to that employed by the police department to find out why trains are being delayed.

The NYPD's system of tracking criminal activity, CompStat, will be adapted and applied to on-time performance. The average number of delays each month has surged more than 27% during the past year.

It is known that track maintenance is the largest factor, causing a monthly average of 2 749 'train stoppages' during the past year compared to 1 660 the previous year. Other causes include passengers holding doors open at stations, fires and accidents.
