USA: The police department of San Francisco’s BART has made data for serious crimes at and around its stations publicly available.

Fed by data from the police department’s computer-aided dispatch, CrimeMapping.com shows information about reported Part I crimes at BART stations. Details of crimes in the surrounding area are also available to view where the local jurisdiction participates in the programme. The website can also offer charts and graphs, and stores the data for up to 180 days.

BART says that this is aimed at increasing the efficiency, accuracy and transparency of its crime reporting. ‘This new effort reflects my department’s commitment to transparency and community oriented policing’, said BART Police Chief Carlos Rojas.
