Overview

You will work within RSSB’s Risk & Safety Intelligence Department, which manages, analyses and reports on health and safety information for the GB railway. The Departments outputs include performance reports, learning from incidents and investigations, modelled estimates of underlying risk, tools and guidance. These are used across the rail industry to inform decisions that affect the safety and health of workforce, passengers or the wider public. The Department works closely with RSSB’s members to understand and meet their needs and to help them get the most from its products and services.

Senior Data Analyst, internally called Senior Risk & Safety Intelligence Analyst

 

Responsibilities

As a Senior Risk & Safety Intelligence Analyst, you will proactively build on your existing skills, knowledge and experience to carry out a range of tasks such as the following:

  • Assist and lead on monitoring and promoting understanding of railway-wide safety risk using:
    • Data from the industry’s Safety Management Intelligence System (SMIS).
    • Information generated by control logging systems, accident investigations, close call systems, audits and inspections, operational data feeds and research reports.
  • Identify significant safety insights, including new or uncontrolled hazards, by analysing accident and incident reports, data and other safety intelligence.
  • Assist and lead on the production of regular and ad hoc reports summarising the position on railway risk and safety performance. Input to special topic risk reports for our members and other key stakeholders.
  • Assist and lead on developing, maintaining, promoting and providing user support for the Department’s risk tools and its other member-focussed products and services.
  • Assist and lead on the development and maintenance of sections of the Safety Risk Model through which safety risk can be assessed, tracked and forecast. Analyse railway-wide safety risk and assist in ensuring that parties inside RSSB and the Railway Group are aware of the risk profile and the major risk contributors.
  • Advise on, support and lead on risk assessments as required by the Head of Risk and Safety Intelligence, including to support changes to Railway Group Standards.
  • Manage the technical aspects of risk assessments and cost benefits analysis as required. This may include scoping out of work for internal and external clients to develop methodologies and approaches appropriate to their particular problem as well as undertaking the resulting work.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Experience in a similar technical role.
  • Knowledge of data extraction, manipulation and visualisation tools and techniques, such as SQL and relevant programming languages, and familiarity with MS Office.
  • Able to work effectively as part of a team as well as on your own.
  • Planning and organisational skills.
  • A communicator with the ability to work with a range of stakeholders and present information relevant to the audience.
  • A commitment to RSSB’s values and customer

Desirable

  • Railway domain knowledge and understanding of the hazards present.
  • Knowledge or interest in safety management or the management and operation of the railway would also be an advantage.
  • Ideally, hold or be working towards a higher-level qualification or professional accreditation e.g. chartership (CEng or equivalent).
