Overview

The Sustainable Rail Programme Lead will manage the development and delivery of the Sustainable Rail Programme – the range of activities needed to deliver and implement the strategic direction. You will undertake a range of activities coordinating action, assisting the development, provision and uptake of practical solutions and tools.  

A key member of the Sustainable Development Leadership Team you will work closely with internal stakeholders, to proactively guide the ongoing collaboration for sustainability throughout the rail industry in line with the Sustainable Rail Strategy.

Responsibilities

  • Maximise the value of Sustainable Rail Groups; essential cross industry collaboration. Take responsibility for the full schedule of meetings and the planning and delivery of group activity – Sustainable Rail Executive, Sustainable Rail Leadership Group – working with colleagues to ensure the governance structure including technical groups is effectively delivering on the SRS.
  • Develop the content for, and maintain oversight of, the various initiatives and projects within the Sustainable Rail Programme; validate with the RSSB topic lead to engage industry and maintain support.
  • Regularly review the programme activities and pipeline with the project delivery team to assess progress, anticipate required communications and plan with Marketing, Communications and Engagement team to maximise impact of deliverables.
  • Where appropriate, act as the business lead and sponsor’s agent for projects needed to embed the Sustainable Rail Strategy and sustainability culture within the industry, ensuring that task deliverables are produced in a timely manner and to the required standard whilst also ensuring the stakeholders are kept engaged.
  • Deliver technical input and advice internally on a range of sustainable development topics, focussing on how a response to these issues can be practicably implemented.
  • Lead communication and engagement activities with stakeholders to develop and promote the Sustainable Rail Programme. Manage the programme’s engagement with international rail and outside rail industry forums and leaders.
  • Point person for the Department for Transport on passenger train service contracts. Ensuring that the necessary commitments/requirements to deliver the SRS are woven into the contract.
  • Provide advice to RSSB members, either directly or via the Engagement Manager, on the Sustainable Rail programme and the solutions if offers. Supporting members with technical information, and practical advice as they work to align with and deliver against the SRS.  
  • Monitor and provide regular reports to the Sustainable Development Director, Department for Transport, or otherwise where needed on each delivery task within the Sustainable Rail Programme.
  • Take the lead to support the Sustainable Development Director to manage team resources, programme, workload, business planning and authorising time booking.
  • Work alongside the Sustainable Rail Solutions Lead to ensure RSSB guidance and tools on sustainability continue to reflect best practice and are actively used by industry and RSSB members, such as the Environmental Data Tool.
  • Lead, manage, mentor and coach direct report(s) to ensure the quality and timely delivery of their work, provide suitable development opportunities and assist them in the management of their workload.
  • Deputise for the Director Sustainable Development at external meetings and events to promote the work of the team.
  • Deputise for the Director Sustainable Development at internal meetings, representing the Sustainable Development Directorate.

Qualifications

  • Qualified in sustainability and environment to MSc level or with the equivalent industry experience.
  • Chartered status with the Institute of Environmental Managers and Assessors, or equivalent.
  • Expertise in sustainable development, including a relevant qualification or equivalent industry experience
  • Expert in the application of sustainability management approaches to drive change within an organisation or sector.
  • Expert knowledge of sustainable development issues and responses within and outside the railway industry, nationally and internationally.
  • Project and stakeholder management experience.
  • Experienced at managing stakeholders at all levels and across multiple disciplines.
  • Able to work on own initiative as well as a leader of, or part of a team.
  • Effective communication, presentation and interpersonal skills including the ability to influence and negotiate effectively.
  • Ability to coach and manage a team.
  • A commitment to RSSB’s values and customer service is also essential to the role.
