UK: Rolls-Royce has been awarded a contract to supply Hitachi Rail Europe with 136 Series 1600 MTU PowerPacks for use on the 36 Class 802 electro-diesel trainsets which Great Western Railway has ordered for use on services from London to Plymouth and Penzance from 2018.

Series 1600 MTU engines are already being fitted to the similar trainsets which Hitachi is building under the Department for Transport’s Intercity Express Programme.

Announcing the latest order on December 20, Rolls-Royce said the 12V 1600 R80L engines would offer high power density, low fuel consumption and low emissions, with a built-in SCR unit to ensure they meet EU Stage IIIB emissions legislation.
