UK: Wabtec has signed a 10-year agreement to maintain GB Railfreight’s fleet of 585 FEA intermodal platform wagons at the operator’s Peterborough maintenance hub. This will make use of Wabtec’s KinetiX laser‑guided high speed imaging technology to support ‘pit stop’ style maintenance.
In what Wabtec say is a first for the UK rail freight sector, the data-rich high‑precision information generated by KinetiX — capable of capturing 20 000 images/sec — will be used to adopt a proactive ‘pit stop’ maintenance regime, with wagons assessed according to their calculated life cycle. This is intended to reduce in‑service faults, strengthen fleet resilience and increase reliability.
‘This agreement represents a major step forward in how we care for and manage our wagon fleet’, said Liam Day, Director of Assets at GB Railfreight, on January 29. ‘By integrating Wabtec’s KinetiX technology into our operations, we gain unprecedented insight into asset health, allowing us to make smarter, data‑driven maintenance decisions. This will not only enhance reliability for our customers but also set a new benchmark for wagon maintenance across the UK freight sector.’
