UK: Rolling stock leasing companies Angel Trains, Beacon Rail, Eversholt Rail and Rock Rail have signed a memorandum of understanding with the Rail Safety & Standards Board creating a framework for cross-industry research projects.

A forum has been set up to govern the work and provide co-funding for key R&D initiatives.

Projects in the first year will include an innovative suspension design which aims to reduce track wear and improve ride comfort; a review of AC electric rolling stock power limitations with the aim of improving capacity and optimising train performance without the need for major new investment; assessing technologies to deliver reliable braking in low adhesion; and improving the assessment of rolling stock crashworthiness.

‘These four important research projects, collaboratively funded for the first time in partnership with multiple ROSCOs, are going to bring benefits to the whole rail industry’, said Richard Walker, RSSB’s Deputy Director Research, on June 20.
