Effects of weather on the rail network

UK: Network Rail and the Chartered Institution of Railway Operators have launched a weather learning programme, which is to strengthen meteorological knowledge among operational and other staff to enable more confident and informed decision-making during adverse weather conditions.

The programme, which is open to Network Rail staff and the wider rail industry, is part of a Weather Academy which Network Rail established in 2022 as part of its commitment to building weather resilience. Training covers forecasting, climate change and weather hazards, with a series of e-learning modules and classroom-based workshops featuring real-life scenarios and case studies. It also seeks to equip staff to make local operational decisions specific to their areas.

‘We can’t control the weather but with the right knowledge, tools and training we can control how we respond to it’, Network Rail’s Industry Weather Response Director Lisa Angus said on October 9.
