UK: Kirklees Council has appointed rail consultancy SLC to develop an outline business case for enhancements to ‘transform’ the Penistone Line between Huddersfield and Sheffield.

Proposals to be explored include increasing train speeds and upgrading the infrastructure, including reinstating some sections of double track to enable the operation of two trains/h in each direction. The work will also explore opportunities to modernise the stations to improve the passenger experience and accessibility.

‘Connectivity is a key driver for growth, and the Penistone Line has the potential to serve its region better through a series of targeted improvements’, commented SLC director Sam Uren on September 23.

Councillor Moses Crook, Deputy Leader & Cabinet Member for Transport & Housing, said ‘we are thrilled that Kirklees Council has been awarded this vital funding to improve our rail network – and now the green light to begin making progress towards delivery. This is more than just investment in our railways – it’s an investment in our communities and will make a real difference to residents living along the Penistone Line route and across Kirklees.’
