Bombardier Transportation is to supply 119 Flexity trams to Wien.

AUSTRIA: Wien transport authority Wiener Linien has formally awarded Bombardier Transportation a €431m contract to supply 119 Flexity trams with an option for 37 more, the manufacturer announced on June 4.

Bombardier had been named preferred bidder on December 1. The firm contract includes 24 years of maintenance support under Bombardier’s FlexCare programme, which is designed to allow operators to maintain vehicles at their own depots under the overall responsibility of Bombardier.

The trams are to be assembled at Bombardier’s plant in Wien for delivery in 2018-26. Intended to replace high-floor E2 tram-and-trailer sets, they will be 34 m long with a capacity of 212 passengers, multi-purpose areas and low entrances. They will have Bombardier’s Flexx Urban bogies and Mitrac propulsion equipment

‘We wanted a vehicle that is modern, comfortable and environmentally-friendly, that fits the existing infrastructure and offers good value for money’, said Wiener Linien CEO Gunter Steinbauer
