Abellio Group
Part of Abellio Group, a subsidiary of Nederlandse Spoorwegen.
Abellio Deutschland has comprised the following state-based operators:
- Abellio Rail Mitteldeutschland: operates the Saale-Thuringia-Südharz electric network on 15-year contract from December 2015;
- WestfalenBahn GmbH: operates regional train services in Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia;
- Abellio Rail NRW: ceased operation on January 31 2022, replaced by National Express, DB Regio NRW and VIAS Rail (see below);
- Abellio Rail Baden-Württemberg: ceased operation on January 1 2022, replaced by state-owned Südwestdeutsche Landesverkehrs-AG (SWEG).
Former operations
Abellio Rail NRW was operator of the Emscher-Ruhrtal- and the Ruhr-Sieg-network, and from 2013 began running the Wuppertal – Solingen S7 Müngstener Line. In December 2015 the Saale-Thürigen-Südharz network transferred to Abellio Rail Mitteldeutschland under a 15-year operating contract; the network serves east-west routes between Sachsen/Sachsen-Anhalt and Thüringen. On April 6 2017 Abellio NRW started the company’s first cross-border service from Düsseldorf to Arnhem, and from December 2018 began operating Rhein-Ruhr-Express route RE11, with RE1 to follow in June 2020, under contracts running until 2033.
In July 2016 Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr announced that Abellio Rail NRW would take over operation of six S-Bahn Rhein-Ruhr routes from December 2019 (S2, 3 & 9 and RB3, 40 & 41). However, replacement of these by directly-awarded contracts to other operators from February 1 2022 to December 2023 was announced in December 2021:
- DB Regio NRW – lines S2, S3 and S9 from Abellio, together with Ruhr-Sieg routes RB91, RB46 and RE16;
- National Express – Rhein-Ruhr Express routes RE1 and RE11 from Abellio
- VIAS Rail – RE19 (Düsseldorf – Arnhem) and RB35 (Gelsenkirchen – Mönchengladbach) as well as the diesel-operated S7 linking Wuppertal and Solingen. This service is to be operated by Transdev Rhein-Ruhr from December 2023.
