PORTUGAL: Following its acquisition of a 95% stake in the former freight subsidiary of national railway CP earlier this year, on May 16 container shipping line MSC unveiled its new branding for the business. CP Carga is now Medlog, a name chosen from the 550 proposals submitted by CP Carga employees.

‘Creating this new brand marks the beginning of a new phase in the company, with new values and a new identity, that reflects both the history of CP Carga and the bright future it has as a leading Iberian operator’, said Medlog President Carlos Vasconcelos. ‘Our business strategy acknowledges the need to extend our activity beyond rail transport, as a way to offer fully-integrated logistics solutions’.

Required under the sale terms, the rebranding of CP Carga has been a key priority for its new management, according to MSC, as well as the development of ‘strong synergies with maritime and dry ports’. With the aim of positioning Medlog as ‘a leading logistics operator in the Iberian Peninsula’, the new board is also considering expansion into Spain.

Medlog currently operates a fleet of 34 electric and 30 diesel locomotives, as well as 2 917 wagons. Leasing arrangements have been concluded for four new locomotives, ‘which will be at the company’s disposal during 2017’, said MSC.
