GERMANY: Ziel Terminal GmbH has been established by Samskip (49·8%), Duisport (25·1%) and TX Logistik (25·1%) to operate the Logport III combined transport terminal at Duisburg-Hohenbudberg under a long-term lease.

The 140 000 m2 facility has seven 720 m transhipment tracks, two shunting roads and two gantry cranes, with an annual handling capacity of up to 250 000 loading units.

‘TX Logistik is on course for growth. In order to continue this development and to be able to shift even more transports to rail in the future, the company needs terminal capacities that it can safely fall back on’, said Gianpiero Strisciuglio, CEO of TX’s parent company Mercitalia Logistics, on March 20. Being a shareholder ’means guaranteeing customers an expansion of geographic targets, improved service quality, synchronisation of traction and access slots to terminal areas, and greater transport efficiency, all activities preparatory to a door-to-door service’.

Duisport CEO Markus Bangen said ‘by jointly exploiting the potential of three strong players, we can continuously develop the terminal and be successful together’. Samskip CEO Kari-Pekka Laaksonen added that ’the benefits for all parties are substantial’, and the agreement would grow the use of rail.
