Uruguay’s Ferrocarril Central project contractor CCFC has taken delivery of a 2 400 hp 3GS-24C-DE diesel electric genset locomotive with three QSK19HPI Cummins engines. It was originally built by NRE for El Zorro of Australia in 2013, but had sat undelivered at Mt Vernon until being acquired by CCFC in February.
Alpha Trains has awarded Alstom contracts to update 55 Bombardier Traxx Class 186, eight Vossloh G1206 and 14 Vossloh G2000 locomotives to ETCS Baseline 3 Release 2 as part of the Dutch ERTMS programme co-financed by the Connecting Europe Facility.
Green Cargo has been awarded a three-year extension to its contract to move 700 000 tonnes of steel coil and cut lengths of sheet steel per year from SSAB’s plants in Borlänge and Oxelösund to customers in Sweden and Denmark. ‘We have built a system in the wagonload network that can manage substantial fixed flows in parallel with smaller variable flows’, said Carl Stjärnesund, Strategic Account Manager at Green Cargo.
Union Pacific is building a grain transload facility within its Global IV intermodal terminal in Joliet, Illinois, which will be managed by the JCT 50:50 joint venture of Consolidated Grain & Barge Co and Gavilon Grain. Regional producers and processors will be able to transport grain, grain products and oilseeds by lorry to the site for loading into intermodal containers for shipment by rail to west coast ports for export. Completion is planned by Q4 2021, and the terminal will have the capacity to process 50 000 containers/year.

Extensions have been agreed to coronavirus pandemic related derogations to the Regulation concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Rail. A derogation concerning the recertification of dangerous goods safety advisers every five years has been extended until October 1, while a special agreement to enable the transport of medical gas cylinders after the periodic inspection deadline has been extended to June 30. OTIF said the high number of countries that have signed the multilateral special agreements shows the importance of the derogations during the health crisis.
